Reverend Al Sharpton has offended Michael Jackson fans and people of different races all over the world after making racially-charged allegations that Michael Jackson hasn't been treated the same as other stars who have died - because he was black.
Rev. Al Sharpton said Sunday at the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles: "I am here because of the disgraceful and the despicable way some elements of the media have tried to destroy the legacy and image of Michael Jackson."
"You have had other entertainers that have had issues in their life. But you [the media] did not degrade and denigrate them...Show the same respect for Michael and Michael's family that you showed Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley."
"I don't think the media understand who Michael was," Sharpton reportedly said. "I don't think they have any cultural significance." Perhaps Al overlooked Michael's history of child molestation allegations and 12 plastic surgeries deforming his face. Perhaps he also overlooked how much media attention Michael has received since his death - and how much praise he has received from millions around the world, including from the media - even being referred to as 'The King of Pop'. Perhaps he overlooked that at least half of Michael's fans are white Americans - and that all of his fans praise him for his legacy and his musical genius. In fact, many have complained that Michael Jackson has received too much praise and coverage after a life of drugs and odd behavior with young children, but the endless tributes and coverage continue. And as for Elvis Presley's death, reports were rampant about his drug use, his 'dirty' music and his weird life. Millions have tuned in to several programs on several networks about Jackson's life and legacy - the hardships he conquered and the hurdles he overcame - yet Rev. Al Sharpton continues to sing his song of racism. The only racist one here is YOU, Al Sharpton.
